Transition Clinics

Transition Skills - Level 1

For this clinic we will explore the ins and outs of a good transition.  Often referred to as the fourth event in multi-sport, having an efficient transition is an important skill to have for any distance.  Transitions are the easiest place to reduce your overall time because they require no additional fitness, only practice and technique.

In this class we will learn to develop a race-day strategy and discuss every aspect of the transition from gear and equipment placement to rules and regulations.  We will also be practicing techniques for mounting and dismounting the bicycle in a specific area as well as understanding how to rack your bicycle, transition etiquette, and the pre-race walk through

Acceptable bikes:  Road bikes, Triathlon bikes, TT bikes, and Mountain/ Hybrid bikes with street specific tires.
No knobby tires will be allowed.

Class Location:  Treasure Island
Class Size:         10 people
Class Duration:   2-hours
Class Cost:         $35-

Phil, Thanks again for your help with my transitions. I continue to get faster. Amongst my age group, I have one of the fastest transitions. At the Treasure Island Triathlon, there were 154 people in my age group. For T1, I had the 6th fastest transition. Last year, I was 26th. For T2, I had the 10th fastest transition. Last year, I was 80th!" Thanks again. - Dan E.

Transition Skills - Level 2

Building on the skills learned in Transitions skills 1 (T1), this class will introduce you to a variety of intermediate techniques to progress your transition skills and further reduce your time necessary in transition.  We will be focusing mainly on the dismount for this class practicing such skills as:  Removing your feet from you shoes while still on riding, pedaling on top of your shoes, dismounting barefoot, running with bike (holding stem), riding with one hand, riding and braking in a straight line without looking, and timing of dismount.

Note:  This class requires you to be comfortable enough to ride one handed without looking where you are going while riding a straight line.  If you feel uncomfortable with this skill please consider taking the balance and control course to refine this skill.

Acceptable bikes:  Road bikes, Triathlon bikes, TT bikes.  Please no Mountain/ Hybrid bikes for this clinic.

"Phil,
I had some great transitions at Vineman.
Compared to last year, I took 1'
off my time for T1 and 1' 45" of my time for T2.
The running dismount felt great.  It even got a few cheers from the
spectators.
Thanks for your help."
Daniel

Transition Skills - Level 3

Building on the skills of a previous class (T2), this course will focus on speed and keeping the shoes attached to the bicycle at all times. If you want to have a transition like the pros, this is the course. You will be required to mount the bicycle barefoot and insert your feet while pedaling as well as remove your feet while at speed and dismount barefoot.  We will also be employing the cyclocross dismount, a running dismount that requires no full stop of the bicycle and be learning the technique of running with the bicycle by the seat.

Note:  These techniques are very advanced and require good balance and excellent bike handling skills.  Participants are required to have completed transition skills 2 before taking this class.  Also you must have Velcro closure shoes, Triathlon specific preferred.

Acceptable bikes:  Road bikes, Triathlon bikes, TT bikes.  Please no Mountain/ Hybrid bikes for this clinic.

Class Location:  Treasure Island
Class Size:         10 people
Class Duration:   2-hours
