The Zippy 5k road race was
contested on Sunday, 5/13 in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The Zippy 5k
is part of the Pacific Association of USA Track & Field and is a
points race for both the individual and team standings. As a result
of this race's importance as it relates to the local running scene, Zippy
always draws the big guns of northern California's running teams!
Hypercat athletes, Kevin Kennedy, Mark Gross
and Rachel Sears all entered the race and finished with outstanding
results.
Kevin and Mark toed the line at 8:15am for the men's race which featured
an incredibly fit field. In only his 3rd 5k race ever, Kevin
ran a personal best time and finished in an impressive 17:08 clocking.
Equally impressive was the performance turned in by Mark Gross, who had
previously never competed in a 5k run race. Mark finished in 28:23 minutes
with a 9:09 per mile average. That pace is nearly a minute faster than Mark's
previous training runs of similar distance. Congratulations to Mark
and Kevin on both of their performances on 'just a Sunday training day'!
The women's field, included Hypercat coach,
Rachel Sears with a start time at 9:15 am. Under overcast skies,
cool temperatures and light winds, the women's race took off at a
blistering pace. Rachel ran a steady run using this 5k as some up
tempo work for the upcoming California Half-Ironman triathlon on 5/19.
Rachel finished strong in 19:26.
Congratulations to all on a super run in park!
